Tips for managing medication across time zones

When travelling it can be difficult to remember to take your medication as travelling often disrupts usual routines. Below are some tips of how to continue to take medication safely whilst travelling across different time zones.

  • If you usually take multiple tablets it is worth investing in a tablet organiser if you don’t’ have one already. Tablet organisers are a great way of ensuring that you take your medication on the correct days throughout the week.
  • If the medication that you take is time dependent it is a good idea to keep a watch or clock the time that it is in your country of residence so that you can continue to take your medication at it’s normal time.
  • If you are travelling to a time zone of more than 4-5 hours’ difference, keeping a watch with the time at your country of residence may be harder to do. If this is the case, you should adjust your medication to the new time zone, ensuring that you do not take more medication than prescribed in a 24-hour period.
  • Whilst travelling, you should continue to take medication as prescribed for example with food or on an empty stomach – depending on how it has been prescribed to you.
  • If you do happen to miss a dose of ‘preventative’ tablets such as blood pressure tablets or statins this will not matter too much. However, if you miss a dose long term medication then you should immediately seek medical help.
  • Another way of ensuring that you continue to take medication whilst travelling is to set reminders/alarms on electrical devices that will remind/notify you of when you are required to take your medication.

These tips are intended as general health advice and should not be used in replacement for visiting a doctor. If you have a specific health condition that you are required to take medication it is recommended to visit your doctor so that he/she can advise you on the best course of action.

Whilst travelling abroad is it also important to purchase travel insurance before you depart.  If you are taking any form of medication during your travels, travel insurance can cover the costs of buying new medication in the event of theft or loss of luggage containing medication.
