The importance of purchasing Medical Insurance for travel

There’s nothing better than travelling the world learning about different customs and cultures, meeting new people are relaxing. Popular destinations include: Canada, USA, Chile, India, Thailand, United Kingdom and Australia.

Whether you are travelling with family or friends, when planning for a trip it is important to remember to purchase medical insurance for travel. It is important to obtain medical insurance for travel for the following reasons:
1) Medication lost during trip – If you are taking any form of medication during your travels, medical insurance can cover the costs of buying new medication in the event of theft or loss of luggage containing medication.

2) Medical Emergency while travelling – It’s not unusual for the cost of medical expenses and hospitalisation abroad to be very expensive, particularly in countries such as the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore. If in the unfortunate event of hospitalisation during your travels, medical insurance for travel can cover you for emergency expenditure, such as medical bills, ambulance costs and even repatriation.

Remember also that on-going or pre-existing conditions such as: diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or cancer may not be covered under many medical insurance for travel policies. If you suffer from an existing medical condition, it is important to ensure that the medical insurance for travel that you chose, covers your condition, otherwise you may find yourself uninsured in the event of a claim
The Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea (TSE) or European Health Card is not an alternative for medical insurance for travel. The Tarjeta Sanitaria offers limited medical coverage for travelling abroad. Each country’s healthcare system operates slightly differently, services that are free in Spain may not be free in another country. (See below for more information).

It is important to know that the Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea (TSE) or European Health cannot be used as an alternative to travel insurance when abroad, as they do not cover you for the following:
it does not cover any private healthcare treatment
it does not cover your costs for lost or stolen property,
it does not cover your costs if you are travelling for the purpose of attaining medical treatment
it does not cover repatriation costs or return flights
it does not cover costs if you have to cancel your trip
it does not guarantee free services.
