Travelling with allergies

Travelling abroad to a new place allows you to have new experiences and get to know new cultures, but it can be at the same time a risk for those who have allergies. However, this is not a reason you should avoid travelling completely, now we are going to share some tips for you to have in mind in the moment of planning a trip and to enjoy it the most you can:

The first step is to plan your trip:

1. How are you going to get your destination? (Airplane, train, bus)

When you begin to plan your flight or journey it is important to know about the allergy policies, food management of the airline or Transport Company you are using. You may want to know if the snacks contain any allergic ingredient, it is better to contact the airline in advance to verify this information, ask about their allergies management and inform them about your medical situation before buying the flight.

On the other hand it is important to take into account that the 100ml policy, does not apply for liquid medication, as long as you have a medical prescription, make sure you have it with you at all times.

2. Which places are you going to visit?

It is important to make a list of the restaurants or places you are going to visit, in order to know that the ingredients of any food will not contain allergens, it is helpful to check recommendations of places from people who have visited before and avoid trying new food if you are not sure what ingredients it may contain.

If you are susceptible to allergic contact reactions, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before eating or putting your hands in your mouth.

3. What are you going to take with you for the trip?

Take a first aid kit with all the required medication you would need (antihistamines, bronchodilators) or others. Include auto injectable adrenaline (epinephrine) and take it with you at all times.

It is very important to double check the medication expiration dates.

Take the necessary documents for your trip:

  • Translation cards: a three-set card in different languages with details of your allergic information.
  • Medical prescription
  • Emergency plan with all of your emergency contact details and location of the closest emergency department.
  • Copies of your allergic care plan with all the additional medical details you would need.
  • General medical report.
  • Non-perishable food that could be safe for you to eat in case you do not find anything adapted to your requirements as dried pasta or allergen-free snacks.

Finally it is really important to get travel insurance
